Jaleel White attends the “Muhammad Ali: The People’s Champ” Opening Night Film on September 23, 2015 in New York City.

*Jaleel White played iconic TV super nerd Steve Urkel for nine seasons on “Family Matters,” and while he distanced himself from the character after the series ended, in an effort to avoid being typecast, he now says he looks back on the experience with “fond memories.”

In a recent conversation with The Huffington Post, White even teased the possibility of bringing back his character’s famous catchphrase while competing on the Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition.”

“I might’ve had a, ‘Did I do that?’ moment on the show,” said White, to which HuffPost replied, “Did you do that?”

“You have to watch the show,” laughed White. “I don’t think you’re gonna be disappointed in my participation.”

Below are excerpts from his interview, which you can read in full here.

What’s it like looking back on “Family Matters”?

White: You know, for me it was puberty. It’s real simple. I don’t even really look back on the role. It was just puberty. So imagine somebody always asking, you know, “Hey, how was life in junior high or high school?” And you’re like, “Yeah, well I probably had a few more pimples than I wanted back then, you know, the girl I wanted to talk to she wasn’t noticing me.” It was puberty, man. It’s kind of different to be a “Seinfeld” cast member or “Friends” cast member. I was not an adult at the time, and so I still have time to define myself as an adult.

familymatters-3

Would you ever bring back Urkel?

White: I don’t know. I know that there’s something funny to do with it. The “Key & Peele” sketch showed me that. I’ll never say never, but it’s really tough if you don’t take the right approach based on how much life has changed. It was puberty for me, and I’m passed puberty now. I don’t know how I’d look in the uniform.

So would a “Family Matters” reboot have to be edgier?

White: You can definitely reboot it at PG-13 or R. And you can have a lot of fun, and I think people would like it, but there’s different people out there. They’re like, “No, I just want to go back in time like a time capsule.” It’s like, “What? Don’t we all.”

Whaaaaat?! Jaleel White was Almost Cast as Rudy Huxtable in ‘Family Matters’ Bombshell

*Jaleel White dropped a bombshell during the “Family Matterscast reunion with EW, and it involves Rudy Huxtable (Keshia Knight Pulliam) from “The Cosby Show.”

The youngest female Huxtable was almost male, and White nealry nabbed the role, but as most of us know, he ended up bringing to life the iconic TV nerd Steve Urkel. This fun reveal is something even his “Family Matters” family didn’t know.

“Really? You’re telling us something now,” says a shocked Telma Hopkins, while Kellie Shanygne Williams exclaims, “You what?!” when it’s revealed that White was almost cast to play Rudy.

“In 1984, I auditioned for The Cosby Show. And that was a very emotional audition,” White recalls at EW’s recent reunion with him and his costars. “[Then-NBC president] Brandon Tartikoff was in the room. And Mr. Cosby, obviously. They brought everybody that made the show, all the kids — they probably had us audition over the course of like five or six hours. My agent had been told that they’ve pretty much settled on [me], so I went to the audition thinking I was just going on a last audition. And then, all of a sudden, this little girl walks in.”

“Now that I’m adult I understand — you’re never going to [present the show to the] network without options. … That was a complete lie just to get me to come back,” White continues. “They were flying everybody out the next day to New York to begin rehearsals to do the show. … We were planning, we were packing; my mom and dad were trying to figure it out, ’cause my dad was in dental school at the time — ‘How are we going to do this, Gail? Are you going to New York with Jaleel to shoot the show?’ And [the producers] came out after about six hours and they said to a bunch of little kids and their parents, ‘We will take you, you, you, and you.’”

When White wasn’t one of the kids they pointed to, “I went home, and I just … I cried my eyes out,” he said.

Adding, “But I did things that a kid does when they’re hurt, and they’re acting out. My mom had to grab me and shake me. She was like, ‘If you ever react like that again to an audition, you’re done [acting].’ She was probably more rattled that I was reacting this way.”

Williams caught her big break as a child actor after her father’s home videos of a young Killie caught the eye of a casting director and she landed the role of Laura Winslow in comedy tv series “Family Matters.”

The show was a spin-off series of the successful “Perfect Strangers” series and centered on the Winslows, a middle-class suburban Chicago Black family.

Williams previously spoke fondly about the show’s matriarch, Rosetta LeNoire, who passed on in 2002.

“She was our foundation,” she said of LeNoire in a 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“Every series has a set leader; it can be a director, it can be a star,” series co-creator and producer Bill Bickley said during the cast reunion special with the publication. “But it’s an emotional foundation that an actor brings to a set, and Rosetta had that. Who she was made everybody want to be better. It made everybody want to be more professional. So Rosetta was really the emotional foundation of the show.”

“She was like the queen,” recalled her TV son Reginald VelJohnson. “And you always treated her with respect — or extra respect.”

“Family Matters” ran on ABC from 1989 through 1997 as part of the network’s “TGIF” programming block.

*“Family Matters” star Jaleel White is opening up about the challenges he faced as a child actor — specifically a Black kid in Hollywood.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, White noted that several popular white child actors of that time received better treatment, such as “Wonder Years” star Fred Savage

“It’s fair of me now to definitely say– You were made to feel African-American. Fred Savage [Wonder Years] was always invited to the Emmys; he was always treated like a darling during this time. I was never invited to the Emmys, even to present. I was pretty much told that I would be wasting my time to even submit myself for nomination,” White said.

White has been discussing his experience as a former child star on his recently launched podcast “Ever After.” His guests are other former child actors who dish about showbusiness. Most recently while and actress Mayim Bialik discussed their history as kid stars.

“Go listen to that episode with Mayim, because she brought the pain when it came to the honesty about the differences of being a white child actor and a Black child actor, particularly back then,” White tells ET of the institutionalized racism he experienced.

“It was so normalized — you just shrugged and said, ‘Oh yeah, that’s for the white kids.’ When a Black person would win anything — never at the Emmys but at least on the Oscars side — if Denzel [Washington] would win or Whoopi [Goldberg] would win, those were ‘Pick up the phone and call the whole family’ moments.”

White was never nominated for an Emmy for his role as Steve Urkel on “Family Matters,” which ran from 1989 to 1998. The sitcom itself was only nominated once for outstanding special visual effects in 1996.

What are your thoughts on Jaleel’s struggles as a Black child actor? Let us know in the comments below!

Jaleel White Announces Launch of Purple Urkle Cannabis Brand with 710 Labs

*“Family Matters” star Jaleel White has launched a new cannabis line called ItsPurpl through his partnership with 710 Labs

White and the brand will produce variations of the popular Purple Urkle cannabis strain, inspired by his beloved Steve Urkle character. The line is set to launch on April 20, and will be available at dispensaries in California.

In a new interview with Forbes the actor dishes about entering the cannabis industry and potentially growing to more marketplaces in the future.

“710 has never been a brand that pursued celebrity deals or endorsements as our agenda has always been quality above all else,” 710 Labs founder Brad Melshenker tells the publication. He met White on a flight, and the duo connected over their passion for cannabis. “We tend to let the product speak for itself. But over the years Jaleel and I became friends and organically our conversations developed into a project. He was on a journey to find the real Purple Urkel from back in the early 2000’s. Not only that, he wanted to find the most flavorful purple cultivars and had been collecting seeds with his friend Sean over the years just for this purpose.”

Below are excerpts from White’s conversation with Forbes.

READ MORE: Whaaaaat?! Jaleel White was Almost Cast as Rudy Huxtable in ‘Family Matters’ Bombshell

EURweb.com

How long have you wanted to enter the cannabis space?

Jaleel White: It’s been years really. More than five at least. Friends and family always thought it was funny to send me bootlegged pics of myself featured on cannabis products in dispensaries across the country. A childhood friend from the second grade is the person I credit with making sure I went about things the right way. Every few months since at least 2016, a new businessman would come along with ideas that felt very exploitative of the Urkel character legacy and money-minded. My pal Sean would shut them down like a protective big brother. Only one other thing has taught me more patience than this process of getting to market, and that’s parenting my daughter, Samaya.

Has it been surreal over the years, especially in the last decade, to see Purple Urkle cannabis strains flooding into weed marketplaces across the country?

At first it was flattering but then it became frustrating seeing and hearing about Purple Urkle in the cannabis marketplace. The thing that always stood out to me was there no clear brand leader for fire purple weed. It made no sense to me no company of significance had claimed this lane, so why not me?

Tell me about this strain, the growing process: Have you been in the grow?

I’ve got a strain called Stefan which is Purple Urkle x The White. Then there’s the classic Purple Urkle. Purple Urkle is actually not an easy plant to grow nor is it a big yielder. I visited the Oakland facility throughout the pheno hunt process and learned to use my nose in the same way a winemaker relies on his/her sense of taste.

Cannabis testing: how many joints/bowls did you smoke for product testing in R&D?

When the Mendo Purps x Zkittlez sample pods were ready to be smoked, I took home like a whole box of forty or so filled pods. I got five pods in and I had to call my boy, Sean, I was fading. He smoked every single one in my garage that night and I took notes, which numbered plants were our faves. I can’t keep up with his tolerance. But needless to say that was one funny ass night in my garage.

What products can consumers expect in the Purple Urkle line? Vape pen pod, cannabis, noodle joints?

Eighth jars of the real deal Purple Urkle was a must, right out-the-gate. Noodle doinks are my personal fave. Everyone I share them with in my inner circle freaks out over the rotini pasta filter. It’s so unusual, they’ve seen such a hand rolled joint before, the noodle filter never fails to spark conversation. The Live Resin Pods are still so underrated. My boy Sean and I got our hands on some Mendo Purps x Zkittlez seeds almost a year ago. We treated those seeds like gold nuggets in Sean’s home freezer until 710 put ‘em in the ground. To smoke the end result from such a quality pod has been surreal. I feel a little bit like Willy Wonka, the flavor came out so grape candy. Edibles are definitely an aspiration. But we gotta crawl before we can walk.

White is best known for his beloved Steve Urkel character on “Family Matters,” which ran for nine seasons. However, the 44-year-old actor says in his “UNCENSORED” episode that the original main cast didn’t welcome him with open arms.

“I was not welcomed to the cast at all. They know what it was,” White said in his interview on TVOne’s Uncensored. “I didn’t think anything of it, being cast to be on Family Matters, because it was supposed to be a guest spot, one and done.”

*Those who watched the ’90s sitcom “Family Matters” can remember the Winslows were a warm, watertight bunch. However, it now turns out there was more than met the eye; there was some drama behind the scenes.

JoMarie Payton, who starred as matriarch Harriette Winslow for nearly all of the series’ nine seasons, was interviewed by ET’s Rachel Smith as part of the Mother’s Day celebration of Iconic TV Moms. Payton revealed some previously-unknown details about the show. She says Steve Urkel, who played Jaleel White in the Family Matters, may have been affected by the fame his role afforded him. The young star developed a rough attitude.

“There was one time he actually wanted to physically fight me,” Payton said, recalling the season 9 episode, “Original Gangsta Dawg,” in which White also played Steve’s “gangster” cousin, OGD. “[There was a scene where] I said we can’t do that, standards and practices will not let that pass, it’s not gonna happen. He wanted to do it anyway… He was so mad, he started kicking and screaming and stuff.”

“He said something about, ‘She must want to melee.’ I said, ‘What’s a melee?’ He said, ‘a fight.’ I turned around — if he wanna fight, I would,” she continued. “Darius [McCrary] grabbed me. I was gonna whip his behind.”

But with hindsight, thanks to years of maturity, Payton now says she recognizes White was “just a kid” in those days and so she never blames him entirely for his immature attitude. In her words, she doesn’t give him “all the credit”.

“I give some of those adults credit too,” she pointed out. “Letting him run wild and do whatever he wanted to do, thinking he can say what he wants to say, you know, and hurt people’s feelings and all that.”

She jokes that she is a fighter, having been through much.

“I’m a Leo; I’m a fighter,” she said during the interview.

Indeed, it wasn’t just White who turned Payton the wrong way; she recalls that the show’s producers at one point decided to fire Jaimee Foxworth unceremoniously. Jaimee played Judy, the youngest sibling in the Winslow family. She played for the first four seasons before being shown the door.

“For me, it was a bad decision,” Payton recalls. “When I asked what happened to her, as she wasn’t at rehearsal, I was told that it didn’t matter. Nobody’s gonna notice.”

She added that they did wrong to take “my baby”, explaining how attached she was to the child stars in the cast.

“If they had taken the oldest child the way they did with The Cosby Show and they put her off in another show, you could make excuses that she’s out with her friends. She could reoccur; you could do whatever you want to. But when you take the baby?”

But she is not stuck in the past; she says she has tried her best to abandon the past hard feelings and only focus on the enduring love she has for the show.

“I did love all of my Family Matters crew,” she explained. “I’ve kept in touch with a lot of them, I see them on other shows… I love them all. We had incredible writers, I love them, and they know who my issue was with. It wasn’t with the entirety of them.”

Family Matters cast

She was then asked if she would be willing to reunite with the cast and crew for a reboot of “Family Matters.”

“You know what I tell people? I never say never,” She responded.

Payton is currently busy with her role as Suga Mama Proud on the Disney+ revival series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. The series was recently selected for its second season, two decades after the first series aired on The Disney Channel.

*Jaleel White did not attend the “Family Matters” reunion panel during 90s Con over the weekend in Tampa, Florida, but he was a hot topic during the event.

That’s4Entertainment hosted 90s Con Florida at the Tampa Convention Center, featuring panels with stars from all your favorite 90’s shows.  White did not join his “Family Matters” co-stars for the festivities, leaving many fans wondering if there is still bad blood among certain cast members.

As The Jasmine Brand reports, during the “Family Matter” panel, White’s absence was noted, with Reginald VelJohnson (Carl Winslow) saying, “I love you Jaleel. You’re wonderful. Sorry you’re not here. I miss you.”

Jo Marie Payton (Harriette Winslow) added, “You know what baby, I still love you…we grow, we learn, we change. You know what I’m saying.”

She added, “And we get it. We get a little more accepting of life and everything and all. And I would like to say, if you were here [and] I could hug you, I would.”

She continued, “‘Cause I don’t want you to hold anything either. I still love you. I still see you as that little boy that you were [at] 12 years old when you came to this show.”

According to The Jasmine Brand, Kellie Shanygne Williams still has a good relationship with Jaleel. She said, “I mean – he knows – I talk to him. So [Jaleel] knows I love his crazy butt.”

White is best known for his beloved Steve Urkel character on “Family Matters,” which ran for nine seasons (1989-1997). However, he claimed in 2021 that he wasn’t welcomed by the cast.

“I was not welcomed to the cast at all. They know what it was,” White said in an interview on TVOne’s Uncensored. “I didn’t think anything of it, being cast to be on Family Matters, because it was supposed to be a guest spot, one and done.”

“I didn’t see how I was stepping on anybody’s toes, I was taking anybody’s shine. It’s very important that I say this: I was not very well welcomed to the cast at all, okay?” he shared.

Jaleel White celebrates his 47th bday today, and in a throwback clip, he gives a bit of BTS tea regarding the “Family Matters” cast, the show that catapulted him to stardom. One wished him happy bday and thanked him for sharing his insights, “Happy Birthday!!! 🎁🎉🎂🎈 Very interesting and enlightening! Thanks for sharing the details that we never really thought about and/or knew. I loved the entire cast and to me each character made the show very versatile and unique!!”

Mary J. Blige hit dem angles and posted a word for her fans on Thanksgiving, “For What’s money without happiness or hard times without the people you love?? -J Cole Love Yourz Happy Thanksgiving bless up eat up enjoy !!!” Auntie never misses! Although thankful for the pics, fans were begging MJB to drop a boot line, “DROP A BOOTLINE MS MAAM. Puhleeeease. WE NEED A THIGH HIGH COLLECTION.” One person brought a dose of reality to the comment section no one asked for concerning Mary’s never-will-be boot line, “when Rihanna releases her next album, when She by Sheree comes out in September, when Rasheeda leaves Kirk.” Dang, just pop everybody’s bubble.
